How Stafford Station Gateway Transforms Town Access

The Stafford Station Gateway masterplan is a comprehensive regeneration framework designed to completely overhaul access to Stafford, Staffordshire, by transforming the railway station into a modern, integrated transport hub. By addressing longstanding connectivity issues between the station, the town centre, and surrounding areas, the masterplan establishes a high-quality arrival point that prioritises active travel, efficient public transport interchange, and sustainable urban regeneration.

A Unified Multi-Modal Transport Interchange

At the core of the masterplan is the reconfiguration of Stafford Railway Station to accommodate multimodal travel seamlessly. The project consolidates bus routes, taxi ranks, private drop-off zones, and cycle storage facilities into a coherent, easily navigable layout. By restructuring vehicle access and reducing congestion around Station Road, the gateway ensures that travellers can transition smoothly between national rail services and local transport networks.

Historically, physical barriers such as railways, waterways, and industrial plots have disconnected the station from the rest of the town. The masterplan resolves this by introducing dedicated pedestrian boulevards and segregated cycling paths. A key priority is the direct, landscaped link connecting the station concourse through Victoria Park to the commercial core of Stafford town centre, creating a safe, attractive, and accessible walking route for residents and commuters.

Unlocking Brownfield Land for Mixed-Use Development

The framework opens up approximately 37 hectares of underutilised brownfield land surrounding the station. This land is earmarked for high-quality commercial, leisure, and residential developments. By clustering new homes and workplaces adjacent to the town's primary transit hub, the plan supports transit-oriented development, reducing car reliance for daily commutes and bringing economic activity directly to the gateway area.

Enhancing Arrival and Public Realm

The masterplan redefines the arrival experience into Stafford by replacing outdated industrial infrastructure with public plazas, green corridors, and civic spaces. High-quality lighting, intuitive wayfinding, and open public realms are integrated to make navigating from the station intuitive and welcoming, reinforcing Stafford’s identity as a key destination in the West Midlands.

Future-Proofing for Regional Growth

Positioned on the West Coast Main Line, Stafford is a strategic junction for regional and national rail travel. The Gateway masterplan prepares the town's transport infrastructure for future capacity increases and regional connectivity projects. By upgrading local road networks, modernising parking through consolidated multi-storey facilities, and expanding active travel options, the plan ensures Stafford can sustainably absorb rising passenger volumes and economic growth over the coming decades.
