Military Units at Beacon Barracks Stafford

This article outlines the active British Armed Forces units currently stationed at Beacon Barracks in Stafford, Staffordshire. Following substantial redevelopment under the Ministry of Defence’s BORONA Programme, the site serves as a vital communications hub for the British Army and hosts specialized elements of the Royal Air Force.

Beacon Barracks, situated on the former site of RAF Stafford, is primarily home to the Royal Corps of Signals under the 11th Signal Brigade. The main units permanently based at the installation include:

  • 1 Signal Regiment: Relocated from Germany in 2015, this regiment provides mission-critical communication and information systems support to operational military formations, including the 3rd (United Kingdom) Division.
  • 16 Signal Regiment: Also relocated from Germany as part of the consolidation of British Forces, 16 Signal Regiment specializes in providing deployable, secure communications networks to high-level operational and tactical headquarters.
  • 22 Signal Regiment: Based at Beacon Barracks since 2007, this regiment delivers robust battlefield data and voice communication support using specialized mobile satellite and digital communication infrastructure.

In addition to these army signal regiments, Beacon Barracks remains an operational hub for the Royal Air Force through the Tactical Supply Wing (TSW). TSW is a specialist mobile logistics unit tasked with delivering rapid forward refuelling to battlefield helicopters and transport aircraft during exercises and operational deployments across the globe.

Together with various localized military training elements, welfare teams, and administrative support units, these four major formations make up the active military presence at Beacon Barracks today.
