Stafford Half Marathon Route Explained
The Stafford Half Marathon is a premier 13.1-mile road race held annually in Staffordshire, known for its vibrant crowd support and mix of town-centre streets and scenic parkway corridors. This guide details the complete race course step-by-step, tracing the route from its iconic start in Market Square, through the southern suburbs, across the northern bypass, and back into the historic heart of Stafford for the finish.
The Start: Market Square to Lichfield Road
The race begins in Stafford’s historic Market Square, surrounded by cheering spectators. Runners head out through the town centre, navigating pedestrianised streets such as Greengate Street and Earl Street before crossing toward the Riverside area. The course then joins the A34 Lichfield Road, taking runners south out of the central district. This opening section is predominantly flat and fast, allowing participants to settle into their pacing rhythm as the field spreads out.
Radford Bank, Baswich, and Tixall Road
At Radford Bank, the course veers toward the residential areas of southeastern Stafford. Runners turn onto Baswich Lane, crossing over the canal and the River Penk into the suburb of Baswich.
From Baswich, the route moves northward along St Thomas Lane and onto Tixall Road. This section introduces gentle undulations as it borders the edge of Stafford’s green spaces. Runners then turn onto Blackheath Lane, passing modern educational and business developments, including the Stafford campus of Newcastle and Stafford Colleges Group, before preparing for the course's main incline.
The Northern Sector: Beaconside
At the end of Blackheath Lane, participants turn left onto the A513 Beaconside. This long east-to-west stretch spans miles 7 through 10 and represents the most physically demanding portion of the race. The road features steady climbs and rolling sections exposed to open elements. Despite the test of endurance, this wide dual carriageway allows runners ample room to maintain their stride before descending toward the north side of the town.
Stone Road and the Isabel Trail
Upon reaching the roundabout at the end of Beaconside, the route turns south onto the A34 Stone Road. This section provides a welcome downhill descent, offering relief after the Beaconside stretch.
Depending on the specific year's certified course layout, runners either follow the wide cycleways and roads alongside the railway corridor or navigate sections of the Isabel Trail—a paved, converted railway footpath that provides a tree-lined, traffic-free run through Doxey and Castletown.
The Finish: Return to Market Square
Entering the final mile, runners head toward Stafford's inner ring road, passing the perimeter of Victoria Park. The course turns back toward the historic town centre, guiding competitors through Mill Street and Greengate Street.
Lined with dense crowds of supporters, the final straight leads directly into Market Square, where runners cross the finish line beneath the gantry in front of the Shire Hall.
