Stafford Town Centre Seating and Green Upgrades
Recent regeneration works in Stafford town centre, centered predominantly on the transformation of Market Square, introduced an array of modern seating options and sustainable green infrastructure. Funded through the UK Government’s Future High Streets Fund, these improvements were designed to modernize the public realm, support local biodiversity, provide comfortable resting spaces for visitors, and encourage footfall to local businesses.
The green infrastructure additions focused on softening the historic urban environment with climate-resilient and biodiverse plant life. Large raised planters and specialized below-ground tree pits were installed across the Market Square. The new tree pits feature subterranean soil cells that allow roots to establish without disrupting surrounding stone paving, promoting healthy tree growth while aiding urban rainwater drainage. The planting scheme incorporated native and pollinator-friendly shrubs, perennial flowers, and ornamental grasses, designed to provide seasonal color and enhance local urban biodiversity throughout the year.
Complementing the new greenery, a variety of contemporary public seating designs were integrated directly into the streetscape. The council installed modular benches featuring durable hardwood slats and robust metal and stone frames. Several of these seating elements were built directly around or alongside the perimeter of the raised planters, offering shoppers integrated shaded spaces to rest near natural vegetation.
To maintain flexibility for town events, festivals, and weekly markets, the seating and planter arrangements were organized to frame the central open area rather than obstruct it. This configuration created distinct, pedestrian-friendly zones that allow visitors to sit, socialize, and dine outdoors without hindering pedestrian traffic or community gatherings.
